Welcome to my classroom...

Margaret Drost

My dream position to teach would be 3rd grade elementary students, or if I'm looking into a Special Education position, working with middle school children with cognitive impairments would be my dream position. I worked in a middle school classroom as a teachers aid in high school, and it was set up as an extra hour for students who needed some extra time and assistance working on materials for classes. It was set up as an advisory time however for CI students who needed the assistance on work sheets that they could not receive during the scheduled class time.

Important materials I need to have in my classroom would be outlet plugs for charging cords or other miscellaneous electrical objects. Another important thing that I will need in my classroom, would be anything to help stay organized. I want to make sure that for my students and for myself that we stay organized with materials and studying objects. If we stay organized then we will have a clean room along with clean minds. I also want to incorporate motivational banners that will help children with reading along with staying on top of their work and lives. I always loved seeing the positive energy of banners and posters hanging around my classrooms in school.

More things I will include in my classroom layout are shown to the left. I want to have a reading corner for children to either go and quietly read when finished with school work, or a corner in general that students can go and work on school work without being disturbed. This will help them to feel rewarded while doing things that are productive for their education.

I also want to have round tables to ensure collaboration of students ideas and work. This will help them to absorb new ideas and help benefit their education and learning process. Each table will have 4 students, not too many because if there are too many students at one table, non productive socialization will happen and this could disturb the productive juices that could flow between the minds.

I like the idea of have 2 bookshelves, I want to have one shelf with bins that students can place worksheets in that need to be finished or need help on, and the other book shelf with bins that students can either place books they want to read in, or have books organized between genres in. I even could have the books organized by genre in the bins on one shelf, and on the other shelf have students place books they want to read in the bins on the other shelf that has their work in.

I also really want to have a smart board in my classroom. Our school had these growing up and they are very helpful for all things. They can pull up websites you want to show the class, they are interactive so you can write on them and have students come up and write on them, which excites them to get involved.

The activity rug that I have up front in my classroom, will be where we gather to have conversations about school work, assignments, working on the smart board as a group, or for group activities that get everyone involved in a task together.

The purpose for the sink and cupboard space in the back of the room, will be for storage, along with the sinks for various experiments, children who need. to wash their hands for a project, or if we want to enjoy a class treat someone made in. Very helpful in the case of not having to send groups of students to the bathroom to just wash their hands. Sinks are also very helpful for emergencies in which case a child needs to wash their hands.
