Why I Chose Elementary Education.
Margaret Drost
Why the field aligns well with my core values?
I am great at pushing others towards success. I will go out of my way to make sure others achieve their goals. I put others before myself, and this will be excellent in the field of Elementary Education because I will work day and night to make sure I plan the perfect strategies in order for my students to strive.
Why I think it's the best career choice?
I think it is what was always right for me. I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else. I have always loved children, I have always been the type of person who saw the good in people. I have most importantly always been supportive of those around me. I think I'll be great at teaching because I know that I will push my students towards success and nothing less.
Why I want to be an educator?
I grew up in a small town so of course everyone knew everyone. However, even though all families knew everyone, the teachers still started the year off with a fresh mindset of who you were. They gave you the chance to show them who you were. I want to be a pillar for all students to be able to identify themselves to me. I want all of my students to come into my room and feel open to be who they want to be. I want my students to feel the same warm encouragement that I felt from my small community.
Why I chose Elementary Education?
My senior year of high school, I expected myself to go into psychology. However, one of my favorite teachers (who happened to be a special education director) asked me to be a teachers aid for her class, since I had an extra period. Of course I said yes, and that's when my career changed paths. I worked personally with a child with severe reading deficiency. The highest grade he received in any class was a C-. After working with him everyday for the entire year, after only just 1 month of sitting working with him and helping him study for his classes. His grades improved to B's and higher. He just needed some extra support and sure enough I was the one who had a hand in it all. Seeing his smile when he was congratulated on his grades absolutely changed my life. In that moment I realized I wanted to see that light on several kids faces and I wanted it forever.
